How To Prepare Ones Mind For Meditation
In this short article, I am going to offer simple techniques that will prepare one's mind for meditation. Because it can be difficult to move from the busy-ness of the day to suddenly wanting to be present. Too often, one could spend their whole meditation lost in thinking unable to enjoy any peace. So to prepare one's mind for meditation consider this: Meditation is about awareness. You become aware of the thoughts arising instead of being identified with them. This is the main shift that happens in meditation. To prepare one's mind for meditation, I like to have my students start with a simple breathing technique: Breathe rapidly through your nose and into your chest. Not so much as you will pass out. You start out with 20 breaths, then 40, then after a week of practice you should be able to do 100 rapid breaths. Could be as fast as 3 breaths a second. (One breath being one inhale and exhale) After the rapid breathing, go back to breathing normally and bring your attention to the sensations you feel in this moment. This technique can stop the mind all together for a little while and then it is up to you to remain present from here. Another great way to prepare one's mind for meditation is to simply stop thinking. Even if it is just for a second you are able to stop thinking, this can often be enough to break that endless identification with the stream of thoughts and experience what is behind the thoughts. You can stop thinking for as long as you can. Then allow the thoughts to come and then again stop all thought. This is an excellent way to prepare one's mind for meditation. Another technique is with your eyes closed and your body still, to bring your attention to the dominant sensation you feel. Not to describe it nor define it. Just to feel it. Keep you attention on allowing yourself to feel the dominant sensation. If another sensation becomes more dominant in your focus, then move your focus to that sensation. Because if you are keeping your attention on the sensations you feel, you are not distracted by thinking. This is also an excellent way to prepare one's mind for meditation.
