Ssese Islands Holiday Vacation, The Ignored Island
In the Nationals of Kalangala district lies the Ssese Islands are an archipelago of eighty-four islands northwest of Lake Victoria. Also referred to as the Jewel in Lake Victoria, only 43 of the islands are inhabited and they vary in size from less than 10,000 square metres o over 40 kilometers in length for the largest island being Bugala Island.
Occupied by Bantu speaking bassese tribes, it is mainly made up of Baganda, Basoga and people speaking related languages. The people on this island are agriculturalist and fishers. Fishing is the main activity on the island with species like the Nile perch and Tilapia being the most caught. Other activities on the island are forestry, and tourism. Attractions of the area are the natural forest, palm plantations, birds, monkeys and the sandy beaches. It is also a home to many other primates. While on the island you can transfer from one island to another using speed boats, get involved in spots like fishing, forest walks, boat rides, volleyball, building sand castles to mention. The island is a nice place with scenic views to spend a weekend or for honeymoon.
The island has plenty of accommodation facilities whereby private investors have put up beach hotels, camping sites and guest houses. The island can be accessed by a ferry which can be boarded from Nakiwogo in Entebbe and Bukakata landing site in Masaka. If you take the ferry fro Nakiwogo it takes 3 hours to reach the Island and if you take it from Bukakata landing site then you will the island within an hour’s time.
The Ssese Islands is an ideal retreat after a long safari where you can go relax and spend about 3 days there just admiring apart of the pearl of Africa.
