The Cohesive Gel Breast Implant Will Soon Become Available In The United States

The Unites States market has finally gotten ahold of the cohesive gel implant. Europe along with the rest of the world has had access to the implants for the last twenty years (since the 90’s). The cohesive gel implant has proven to be safer than other implants and is making a stance in the U.S. market. The FDA is currently conducting a thorough clinical trial of the cohesive gel implant, thus restricting its use to only a few select women. It will be several years before the cohesive implant will be become available to the average American woman.

Cohesive gel implants are becoming increasingly popular in the U.S. market despite the fact that they aren't FDA approved for unrestricted use. Breast implants are subject to an uncommon condition called capsular contracture. If this condition occurs, the body will form a hard layer of scar tissue around each implant. Cohesive gel implants tend to avoid the formation of capsular contracture. Although it is not exactly known why, it is thought to be because of the cohesive gel implants solid mass of gel or possibly because of its exterior textured shell that prevents the formation of scar tissue.

Every implant carries a certain level of risk for surgical scarring. However, the cohesive gel implant carries a significantly higher level of scarring than either saline or traditional silicone gel implants. The reason why is because cohesive implants are a solid mass of gel and require larger incisions to insert the implant into the breast pocket - they cannot be squeezed through a tiny incision. Thus, larger incisions equate to a higher potential for scarring.

Cohesive gel implants have earned the nickname Gummy Bear Implants because of their texture and feel which is very similar to that of a piece of Gummy Bear candy. The term Cohesive Gel Implant is used interchangeably with the term Gummy Bear Implant.

A concern among women with anatomically shaped breast implants is implant rotation. Although the texture of the cohesive gel implant makes it unlikely rotation will occur, if a rotation does happen the woman will want to get it fixed as soon as possible.
