The Tetris Story: 1984 To Time Immemorial

Designed originally and developed in the Soviet Union, Tetris is a game that through its massive scale design, a gameplay and style change has become one of the biggest games in the world. Over 70 million copies of the game have been sold worldwide till date apart from over 100 million mobile phone paid downloads. Started with a very basic design and concept of placing falling blocks in a systematic manner in order to eliminate them, these games have several new additions and features now, and also involve a lot of changes in terms of the rules and scoring of the game. It is virtually impossible to say however, who exactly was responsible for these changes and additions. There are a lot of issues surrounding the legal licenses of the game, but this does not hamper sales in any way and tetris continues to be loved by millions around the world and played on a daily basis.

The greatest selling pitch for tetris, is its widespread and traditional availaibility for play on a variety of platforms. Apart from PCs, the game was available on platforms such as calculators, hand held gaming devices, more recently mobile phones, mp3 players, PDAs and other media players. Such key ingenuity was given a key to long lasting adulation by its introduction of hand held gaming devices which slingshot it overnight into a legend.

The basic gameplay of any version of tetris has the random falling of tetrominoes. These are blocks of four squares that fall into the playing grid. Lines are to be eliminated by the manipulation of the directions and placement of these blocks so as to create a full horizontal line without any gaps. Once such a line is made, it automatically vanishes and the sequence continues. The blocks must not touch the top of the playing field as this will end the game. The basic scoring system of the game depends on the version that is being played. Players may face faster falling blocks in each new level, or some versions may just concentrate on achieving the highest score possible. Since the inception of the game, there have been tremendous competitions of speed and score among players.
