Initial jobless claims drop more than expected in past week

- Initial jobless claims for the week ended Dec.9 dropped by 19K to 202K, less than the 220K expected and compared with 221K in the previous week (revised from 220K).
- The four-week moving average was 213,250, an decrease of 7,750 from the prior week’s revised average of 221,000.
- Continuing claims: 1.876M vs. 1.887M expected and 1.856M prior (revised from 1.861M).
- The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.3% for the week ended Dec. 2, from the earlier week’s unrevised rate of 1.2%, the Department of Labor said Thursday.
- Advance number of actual initial claims under state programs on an unadjusted basis were 248,299 in the week ended Dec. 9, a decrease of 46,316 from the prior week. Seasonal factors expected a decrease of 23,834 from the previous week, the Department of Labor said.
