Revolutionizing television once again: the long-awaited return of Sandokan with Can Yaman

The Italian fiction based on the hit character who revolutionized television in the 70s, Sandokan, has started filming again. 60 years after the release of the first film about the famous corsair, the character of Emilio Salgari returns to the small screen. The long-awaited Italian series will star Can Yaman, marking his return to filming in Italy after starring in Violeta com el mar.

The original TV version of Sandokan premiered in January 1976 with Kabir Bedi in the lead role, becoming a massive hit and creating a fan phenomenon in the late 1970s. Can Yaman, who has already captured the audience with his role in Erkenci Kus: Dreaming Bird, he will continue this success with his portrayal of Sandokan.

Described as “a grand epic with a strong environmental focus” by Variety, the series is set in the mid-19th century on the island of Borneo, where the native Dayak tribes are dominated by ruthless British colonial power. Sandokan, a pirate who leads a motley crew, has his life turned upside down when he meets and falls in love with Marianne, the daughter of the British consul.

Despite the multiple adaptations of the Salgari character over the years, including a popular cartoon series from the 90s, the new Sandokan series is expected to capture the hearts of audiences once again. After months of preparation, the series began filming on April 22, but viewers may have to wait until late 2024 or even early 2025 for its premiere. The series will be broadcast in Italy by RAI and distributed worldwide by Fremantle, except in Spain where it will be broadcast by Grup Mediterráneo Mediaset España.

Can Yaman leads an international cast in the new Sandokan series, including Ed Westwick, John Hannah, Alessandro Preziosi and Alanah Bloor. The series is highly anticipated by fans of the Turkish actor, and is likely to be broadcast on Telecinco in Spain. Stay tuned for this exciting new adaptation of a beloved character from television history.
